What the training will cover
Men’s Health Forum Scotland
An introduction to Men’s Health Forum Scotland and The Men’s Health Forum Scotland Self Management For Men project will allow participants to be more aware of the purpose, aims and activities of MHFS and also, what work the SMFM project is doing to continue to support individuals and organisations who are working with men on self management of long term conditions.
Long term conditions, self management, men’s health, gender and masculinity
Participants will be asked to explore long term conditions and self management to ensure all participants have a shared understanding of both. However, this aspect of the training is also designed to open a debate on how gender and masculinity impacts on how men approach their health. Specifically, we will look at the barriers created to effective self management for men, as a result of gender and masculinity.
Putting it into practice
This part of the training is designed so participants can explore gender mainstreaming, equality impact assessment, and how gender considerations should impact on policy, planning, services, staff, resources, community/client engagement and outcomes. The purpose of this is to highlight that all service users are not the same and will have different needs relating to gender, age, sexual orientation, race and other factors, and that diversity should be considered in all aspects of service design and delivery.
Other gender health initiatives
By looking at practical examples of how other people have run gender specific health initiatives, participants will be able to draw from actual examples which have been successful.
Outcomes
At the end of the training, participants will have improved knowledge of how Men’s Health Forum Scotland can support their organisation. Participants will also have improved knowledge of gender and masculinity and where ideas of gender and masculinity come from. Participants will have improved understanding of the barriers to effective self management created by gender and masculinity and the particular issues men face, and will also be more aware of the practical steps they can take based on what other organisations have done to make sure their services meet the needs of men. |
