The Haynes Manual
The Haynes Brain Manual has been produced by Men's Health Forum England in partnership with a range of organisations. The full Manual is available below in PDF format for you to either use as an online resource or to print in chapters. The book is the definitive guide to men and mental wellbeing – not only in terms of comprehensive content but the design is also well-suited to a male readership.
The main target audience for the book is men of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in becoming more aware of wellbeing, in the broadest sense. Health professionals will also be able to use the book as a health promotion and education resource.
The Haynes’ format has been chosen because it is ‘male-friendly’: many men are used to using information presented in this way; the ‘body as machine’ metaphor resonates with the way men tend to think about health issues; and, of course, the concept introduces an element of humour (which helps to break down men’s ‘internal barriers’ to accessing health information and advice).
The MHF England was a partner in the production of the Haynes Man manual, a general men’s health book, which has been both critically acclaimed and popular (over 80,000 copies sold since November 2002). The Man manual was described by Hazel Blears MP (when public health minister) as a ‘brilliant publication’ and ‘one of the most effective pieces of health promotion work that I have seen in a long time.’
In NMHWs 2004 and 2005, the Men's Health Forum England produced the Haynes Cancer manual which aims to provide a practical, step-by-step guide to preventing, detecting and beating cancer and the Haynes HGV manual, which promoted awareness of weight issues. The books were produced in close and unique collaboration with other organisations, who also contributed to other aspects of NMHWs 2004 and 2005. These manuals were distributed by Men's Health Forum Scotland as part of our 2004 and 2005 CD Resources.
The Brain manual has been produced in a very similar partnership.
