Masculinity and health service provision

Friday 11th December 2009, Carronvale House, Larbert, Stirlingshire

This one day course is being run in response to a growing demand for information on how best to engage with men regarding their health and is suitable for all those involved in providing services that impact on the health and well-being of men in the UK.

The aim of the day is to examine the impact of gender on the health of men and the implications this has for service provision. The learning outcomes for participants are; to have a better understanding of the interaction between gender and society, a better understanding of the interaction between masculinity and health, and the opportunity to examine practical approaches to engaging men more effectively with health services.

Clearly society’s perception on gender greatly affects the way both men and women view their own health. To target health service provision more accurately at men we therefore need to have a better understanding of masculinity and the way men feel they need to act and behave to portray their maleness.

Building on experiences gained from providing services aimed at improving the health of men, the course will examine how by combining an understanding of masculinity together with a practical approach to service provision we can help men become more engaged regarding their health.
