Eva Asante , Director

Eva has recently been appointed as the new Director for Men's Health Forum Scotland.  More information posted soon.

Sarah McMillan, 10k for Men Development Worker

Sarah McMillan has been working for Men’s Health Forum Scotland since the beginning of March 2005. Her job title is 10k for Men Project Development Worker and she is responsible for organising the MHFS 10k for Men which takes place on father's day every year.

Sarah's background is varied – at Art College she specialised in large scale metalwork and set up in business back in Northern Ireland as a designer/maker. After a few years of this, Sarah no longer was happy being a starving artist so decided to work full time and keep the design work for evenings and weekends. She worked as a sales administrator in a car showroom for 18 months, which cemented in her the need to work for an organisation that contributed positively to the world – so when she and her boyfriend decided to move to Glasgow last year, she looked to working in the Voluntary sector. After spending a short stint working as an administrator for the Simon Community Street Team, she applied for an Information and Administration role with MHFS and was thrilled to be offered the post. From here she progressed to work as the Information and Network Development Worker post, before successfully applying for her current role as 10k for Men Project Development Worker. Since starting in this post, Sarah has started jogging – (it’s only fair really!).

Maureen Docherty, Information and Network Development Worker

Maureen’s background is in administration and she has worked in various departments within Glasgow City Council, Social Work Department and NHS Scotland.  Prior to moving to Men’s Health Forum Scotland, Maureen worked for the National Resource Centre for Ethnic Minority Health (NRCEMH) a unit within NHS Health Scotland.  Maureen’s role was to support the various networks who’s remit was to develop sensitive and culturally competent services to black and minority ethnic groups across Scotland.

Part of Maureen’s remit was to develop the NRCEMH website to help support NHS Boards share information and good practice but also keeping them up-to-date with the latest developments in new legislation, guidance etc.  “It is so important to share information as there is a lot or good work going on across Scotland that no-one knows about!”.

Lorraine Murphy, Finance and Administration Worker

Lorraine started with MHFS in February 2007.  Lorraine has a degree in Accountancy and started off her career working in a bank.  After a while she began to look for a job which was more of a challenge which lead to her taking on the role as Finance and Administration Officer in a charity in Easterhouse.  During her time in Easterhouse, Lorraine had to work closely with clients and really enjoyed working in a community environment.

This motivated Lorraine to undertake a course, an Introduction to Training and Adult Literacies Learning, which enabled her to work with adult learners to help them improve their literacy skills.  Unfortunately (fortunate for MHFS) Lorraine was made redundant at the end of January this year and seen the job advertisement for the Finance and Administration Worker.  Although she has only been in post for a short period of time Lorraine is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Self-Management for Men Project Team

Cara Doran, Training and Events Officer

Cara has a Degree in Plant Science, and, upon leaving university she headed out in the world to gain some life experience working as a Kids Rep in the Algarve. This was great fun and really firmed up her organisation and management skills, especially the day trips with large groups of the Cool Dudes to Zoomarine in the sweltering August heat!  This role helped Cara realise she worked well with people and came to work for the 3-year advocacy project with the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.  This project started after research by the charity showed that many young people with Cystic Fibrosis were feeling isolated and excluded due to the nature of the condition.

The project’s main aims were to gain the views of the health service users and use these to improve the medical and social aspects of their healthcare services.  The project was very successful and led to a small permanent team of Expert Patient Advisers, which were to build on the work of the Advocates and take this information about how to improve services from the patient perspective to Hospital Managers, Specialist Commissioners and politicians.  During Cara’s time with the CF Trust, she worked on the task group and initial board of the Long Term Conditions Alliance, and is excited to be part of a self-management project with MHFS funded by LTCAS.

In her freetime, Cara is a brownie leader, and last year took up an interest in hill-walking, starting with an excellent walk up Ben Nevis with her friends as a birthday treat!  She has also recently been on an amazing voluntary service project to Kenya carrying out peer education training on sexual, maternal and newborn health.  This was supposed to be a once in a lifetime deal, but now looks set to be an annual event!

Duncan Wilson, Project Resource Worker

Duncan Wilson graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1996 from the drawing and painting dept.

He worked and maintained a practice until 2004 when he decided to focus on the design and delivery of community based art projects in Glasgow.  This was mainly with young people and The Refugee Community.

Due to this experience Duncan decided to undertake a postgraduate in Community Education.  As part of this he spent three months on placement with the Red Cross Refugee unit where he worked as part of The Orientation Service.  As part of this internship Duncan set up a drop in for the Refugee Community in Glasgow. This is still running as is organised and run solely by Red Cross Volunteers.

Duncan was then employment by The Red Cross Refugee Unit to develop and run a Family Reunion service for the Refugee Community. He was also active in the delivery of the Red Cross International tracing and message service.

For fun, Duncan enjoys live music and has collected records from a young age with a focus on Reggae, electronic music and Hip Hop. He is also a bit of a Francophile and speaks some French which definitely needs improvement.  He is a keen runner and also enjoys cooking.
